C., MONDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1966 No. 3 Spaniards Score Smashing Success Local townspeople and col lege students had an oppor tunity to see one of Spain’s most popular and exciting song-and-dance companies when Jose^Molina’s Bailes Es- panoles appeared at the College auditorium Monday night, Feb ruary 7. The handsome young company of ten Flamenco dancers, sing ers and Instrumentalists scored a spectacular overnight success when it premiered in Washing ton, D. C. in May of 1962. When the company returned to the Capital the next year, the Washington Evening Star critic wrote, “With those who know Flamenco dancing best, it’s Jose' Molina all the way!’’ Senor Molina is a protege of the great Flamenco dancer. See SPANIARDS page 4 R To Make World Tour a s Danforth Visiting Lecturer To Spealt Here lillarcli 2-3 Flamenco Dancing, Folkmusic Dr. Jose Maria Chaves, a distinguished international lav/- yer, diplomat, educator, and authority on Cervantes, will be on campus March 2-3, as a Danforth Visiting Lecturer. A native of Colombia, Dr. Chaves attended the Instituto de la Salla, and the Superior Normal School in Bogota, where he pursued studies in anthro pology. He holds the degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Bogota, and Masters of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Co lumbia University in New York. In this country Dr. Chaves has represented Colombia as a diplomat in Washington and at the United Nations. This great public servant also helped establish the first public high school ill ill 1941^ and the first private university in Colombia—the University of the Andes—and became its first dean of the faculty. He spon sored the formation of a United States of Latin America for commerce, integration and de velopment of the region. LECTURES Here at Louisburg Dr. Chaves will give a public lecture on “Latin America, the New Fron tier.” This talk is a compre hensive survey of Latin Ameri ca with particular emphasis on close relationship with the United States and the need for continental solidarity. At a student convocation he will speak on “The Cultures and Civilizations of Latin Ameri ca,” giving an interpretation of Intellectual, artistic and scien tific accomplishments of the Latin American peoples and a comprehensive analysis of their way of life. In two informal meetings he will discuss “Patterns of Po litical and Social Progress in Latin America”, and “The Al liance for Progress and the Future of Democracy in the Western Hemisphere.” Campus visits by Dr. Chaves are made possible by the Dan forth Visiting Lecturers pro ject begun in 1957 and spon sored jointly by the Danforth Foundation and the Association of American Colleges. The purpose of this program is “to strengthen the intellectu al, the religious, and the cul tural aspects of a liberal education in the UnitedStates.” Dr. Chaves is one of several scholars from this country and abroad chosen by the Foundation and the Association’s Arts Pro gram for campus visits during the current academic year. Dr. Jose Chaves deHart In Who's Who Professor H. Allen de Hart has been chosen to be included in the 1965-66 edition ofWHO’S WHO IN THE SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST. This reference work gives biographical sketches of people of intra-sectional or national importance. Mr. de Hart, chos en by the editors last winter, met the occupational stature and achievement qualifications in one of the many fields of development in the United States. De Hart is a native of Patrick County, Virginia. He is pres ently the Director of Testing and Guidance, and Director of Cultural Activities at Louis burg College. Mr. deHart did his under graduate work at the University of Maryland, High Point Col lege, and the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He re ceived his Master’s Degree from the University of Virginia, and did additional graduate work at Duke University and Florida State. Through the course of his education he was a member of three national honor socie ties, one social fraternity, and one religious fraternity. From 1948-54 de Hart served in the Ui,..v States Army. Dur- this time he graduated fron) the Army General School, the Artillery School and the Adju tant General’s School. DeHart worked two years with the Army Courier Service and had the opportunity to visit over 34 foreign countries. His Colonial History of Prince George County, Virginia, was published In 1957 with funds provided by the Hopewell His torical Society. In the journa listic field deHart worked as a columnist for The Danville Commercial Appeal and as a free lance writer for the Dan ville Register. In addition to this literary experience, he has published several articles In the field of psychology. He founded the German- Amerlcan Arts Union in 1952, an organization dedicated to the cultural exchange of young artists. Through this organi zation concert artists have made successful concert tours to America. This organization Is now under the Lutheran Church In Germany. At present Mr. de Hart is a See'deHart Page 2
